Life Coaching Progress

It’s been four days since my last session with Jennifer. (If you aren’t sure what’s going on, you can catch up here.) As part of our last session, I committed to applying for 11 freelance writing jobs, writing on my novel at least 30 minutes a day and continuing with the goals set from last week.

I completed my online portfolio (view here), with a small exception of collecting sample articles I’ve written stuck in various and sundry places. But, as is, it can be considered a finished website. I have spent several hours creating a new resume. And have completed one job application. (Ten more to go!)

What I have NOT done is written a single word for my novel. I am currently up to Chapter Four. To date, progress has been sporadic. I’ve written in bursts and spurts, as inspiration struck and time allowed. However, I want to establish a good habit of writing every day. 30 minutes seemed like a do-able chunk, kind of baby-stepping it. Not so much to overwhelm and not so little to barely make a dent. The problem I’ve run into is my time has been consumed with all sorts of things from distractions to true responsibilities.

To solve this dilemma (as write I must!) I have decided to pull a page from my ” nose to the grindstone” days as a programmer – the Covey Time Management System. This morning, after briefly getting dressed, eating, etc., I sat down, wrote out all things I want to accomplish today and assigned letters based on importance. (A = must do, B = should do, C = nice to do) and then a number for each category (A1 = most important thing of the day).

After viewing my list, I set to work on those things I see most important, getting them out of the way. In the past, this has worked well for keeping me on track, both in the short term and the long term. It helps to keep me focused on doing little chunks that move me along towards a bigger goal, as well as making sure I have time for the smaller things that are just as important.

As I created my list, I found I have a bit of planning to do. I need to develop a schedule for my day or, in the very least, a framework of one, so I don’t get caught up in loosy-goosey stuff, chasing rabbits, as we say in Texas. It’s very easy, without a plan, to focus on things that scream for attention, even when they are not as important in the scheme of things. My list will keep me on track. (I love the Covey Day planner – nice birthday gift, if anyone is listening! I’m out of refill pages.)

So, watch out O Magazine! By the time I’m finished polishing myself up, you just might be looking at your newest ingenue columnist!

Awesome. Glad the life coaching is going so well. I could definitely use a life coach to kick my ass in gear. I need to look in to it. Keep it up!

Living in England, the whole life coaching subject is in all new, though many of us need this wonderful trend.
Have you heard of the term, laws of attraction, a debatable and unique concept, that we are what we think, and we undergo what we’ve thought. In life’s terms of science, like attracts like.
I brushed this passed when i first heard the term, a modern sceptic, or so i thought. It’s now 11 months in, things are better for me, just by waking up in the morning and reminding yourself your alive, is the start of things.
Then whenever you have a negative thought, which is 70 percent of the time for all of us on average, we immediately think of a positive one.
    I’m getting better at it.

Something that made me realise, was the story of a friends husband at work, resulting in an accident and leaving him with third degree burns across his face and body. I look at myself each day now, and treasure the life that’s in front of me, live what you can to the full, and should you witness a bad day, then think of someone in a worse position, and sort that day right out.

Respect to Positive thinking, i’ll embrace it all i can.

    Jane x
