Failure, Revolutionary Road & Me
Tuesday, February 17th, 2009
I went to see Revolutionary Road this weekend with a very good friend. The movie was breathtaking. The cinematography alone is worth the watch. DiCaprio and Winslet are phenomenal, as is Kathy Bates. This is a movie destined to become a classic.
At one point in the movie, DiCaprio’s character faces an internal struggle – to make the leap and live his dreams or to continue to suffocate in a life he hates. His fate, his marriage, his life all hinge on whether or not he can overcome his fears.
It left me wondering about myself. In what ways do I allow fear to control what action I take? Is it keeping me from my full potential? What could I do if I just said no to fear and went for it? I realized I allowed being busy, being sick, having ‘no spare time’, or only having a little time get in the way of what I say I want to do.
It was a good reminder for me to stay on track, get back on course and follow my passion. Deiter Pauwels, life coach, poses a series of questions on his site to challenge his readers.
One question really drew me in. He asks What would I do if I knew I couldn’t fail? Visit his site and give yourself a gut check. Are you following your dreams? Are you giving it the best you can? Are you leaving something out for fear of failure?

Curt Yagi
Monday, February 9th, 2009
I’ve had the pleasure recently of listening to one of San Francisco’s up and coming musical talents, Curt Yagi. His music is a hazy-dazy delight, a blend of Norah Jones and John Mayer. While his style is hard to tag and his lyrics are unlike any other, what I really enjoyed the most from the CD was the obvious talent Curt has in handling instruments, both his own voice and the myriad he plays on his CD “What’s Come Over Me”.
Without a doubt, if you are in San Francisco and have the opportunity to catch a Curt Yagi show, you should. I kept thinking to myself, this would be the perfect way to unwind one evening with a bunch of girlfriends. Sitting at a sidewalk cafe, the caressing, melodic sounds….. It would ease my stress for sure. He is also winner of the San Francisco Bay Guardian’s 2008 Best of the Bay Singer Songwriter.
What’s extraordinary about Curt isn’t just his music. During the day, he works with http://www.rocksf.org/, an organization devoted to working with children to promote their success and education through the power of music. I’m a sucker for children and there is always a special place of respect in my heart for anyone who devotes his or her life to making a child’s world a better place.
Check him out at CD Baby.
