Are Plastics Poisoning Me?

I’ve actually known for a while now that most baby bottles are leaching horrible hormone disrupting chemicals into milk and I’ve stopped microwaving any and all plastics. When I do get plastic, I’ve been hand-washing them in hopes of not poisoning my family. (And I wonder why cancer, diabetes and all sorts of horrid diseases have skyrocketed this past century).

But aside from buying my baby glass bottles (yes, it’s an option I know, but all I can see is broken glass EVERYWHERE), what should I do? And is there any hope that those who have slowly been leaching horrid chemicals into our guts to make a profit will be forced to stop anytime soon?

Well – for starters, www.safemama.com, a wealth of information for all things eco and health conscious, has put out a list of paraben and phthalate-free baby care products (http://safemama.com/2008/02/10/cheat-sheet-paraben-phthalate-free-baby-care/).

And the Health Observatory (http://www.healthobservatory.org/library.cfm?refid=77083) has a safety guide for plastics.

And the bright light at the end of the tunnel? California has introduced two bills, SB 1713 and SB 1313, that would ban BPA from baby products, sippy cups and bottles and cancer causing PFC’s from food products. The two bills have passed the Senate and Assembly and are now awaiting their fate before the full Assembly. I’ve heard word that 17 industry working lobbyists are working AGAINST the bills. Let’s hope the elected officials in California have the guts to stand up and say ‘no more’ for the good of the general public.

And I wonder if those lobbyists sleep well at night knowing that lil’ Suzy and Johnny have been sipping their way to all manner of cancers and illness.
