Politics for the generations

I don’t know if I’m the only one, but I’m beginning to feel a little ‘campaign-weary’. I’m still very much plugged in to what’s going on and care very much about what is to come in November, but the back and forth between Hillary and Obama seems to be unending. Texas and Ohio, in many ways, were just anti-climatic. I was really hoping for something to give one way or another.

For those that know me, it’s no surprise that I am supporting Obama. I think Senator Clinton would probably make a good president. She’s smart and very passionate about healthcare, which is one my top 3 list of reasons to care about this election. However, what does concern me is the question of what would really be changing if she were president. I don’t want to just see changes in policies. I don’t want to see only changes in law. I want to see a unity in America, a coming together – I’m ready for a healing of our nation.  So much damage was done in the last 8 years and there is much to heal. I don’t know if Clinton has the capable hands of a healer. I’m not saying she couldn’t, simply that I do not know.

It’s not just a shallow situational change I am hungry for. I want real change in how government is handled. I’m tired of the status quo – of government being run by powerful lobbyists – the pharmaceutical companies, the Halliburtons, the big Oil empires. I want to see policies that actually are in the best interest of the people as a whole, not an elite few. This kind of change, more than likely, cannot be solved with one election. It will probably take the people rising up to demand it while legislators comply.

I want to see America being governed not just for what is good right now but what will be good later. I want deep authentic change to take place that will enhance not just my future as an elderly American, but my children and grandchildren and their grandchildren. I want to know that in 100 years America would still be a leader in the world.   But this America, this ‘American leadership’,  cannot exist if lobbyists influence congress. This America cannot exist if we continue to discount our educational system. This America cannot exist if our health care system is in disarray and home ownership is only for the very rich.

We are on the way down and unfortunately many are too short-sighted to see it.
